Jenny, I don't doubt there were probably several untoward comments on the link...unfortunately any politically-charged website is going to have these.

Indeed, simply reading comments on random political (and sometimes even religious) blogs is enough to make you wonder about the human race in general.

There are a lot of disturbing, and in many cases obscene, comments on the link you gave.

Going back to the original story, I find some details that they were perhaps not aware of.

First

"In June 2008, a Taunton fifth-grade student was suspended for a day for a stick figure drawing that appeared to depict him shooting his teacher and a classmate."

Over-reaction then?

"Chester Johnson told WBZ-TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday.

Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he drew himself on the cross. Johnson, who is black, told WBZ he suspects racism is involved. He said he thinks the school overreacted and wants an apology.

Johnson told the Taunton Daily Gazette, which first reported the story on Tuesday, that his son gets specialized reading and speech instruction and has never been violent in school."

Over-reaction this time? Probably, but note that the teacher was not upset because the boy drew "Jesus on the cross" but because "something that reminded him of the holiday" was a stick figure of /himself/ nailed to a cross and obviously dead.

If I'd seen that I would have been worried too. At least, I hope my first thought would not have been "Sweet child. What profound theological insight!"
